EV charger installation cost: published ranges and scope

An electrician and a homeowner discuss wiring on a brick wall
The short answer

Angi reports $554–$1,380; Tesla estimates $750–$1,500 installation excluding hardware; EnergySage reports $800–$3,000 before equipment. Read the dated source/scope table and shared-data limitations before comparing a quote. These are third-party home figures, not EV Ready USA prices.

Published home-installation figures span different jobs and inclusions. Read the source's scope before comparing its number with your quote. Capacity, route, civil/restoration work, equipment, approvals and commissioning can change the job.

Published home figures, with scope

Sources checked October 13, 2026. These are attributed third-party figures, not EV Ready USA prices. The sources describe U.S. home charging; they are not commercial-project budgets.

Source/datePublished figureBasis and inclusions
Angi, updated September 23, 2026$554–$1,380; $967 average4,398 reported verified projects; headline equipment/permit inclusions are not fully separated. Panel and permit additions can increase the total.1
HomeAdvisor, updated June 20, 2026$554–$1,380; $967 averageCustomer survey/research basis; headline inclusions are not fully separated. It repeats Angi's headline figures.2
Qmerit, published March 18, 2026; metadata modified July 23, 2026$749–$2,500; $1,700 standard-install averagePublisher describes Qmerit's 2026 installation data; equipment inclusion in this headline is not clearly resolved. Its component breakdown lists hardware separately.4
EnergySage, updated June 22, 2026$800–$3,000; $2,442 U.S. average in its state tableExplicitly excludes charger equipment and cites Qmerit's 2026 data. Major panel/civil work is outside its standard-install description.3
Treehouse, March 3, 2026$1,500–$2,750Installer-published typical-home estimate including purchase and installation; panel/load-management work can add more.5
Tesla, no page update date shown$750–$1,500 installation estimateWall Connector hardware separately priced; standard items include permit, inspection and installation warranty; listed complex work adds cost.6

Do not count repeated data as independent confirmation

EnergySage explicitly uses Qmerit data, so those are not two independent datasets. Angi and HomeAdvisor repeat the same headline range/average; their pages do not establish that these are independent samples. Do not average the six rows into a supposed market price.

Qmerit's $1,700 and EnergySage's $2,442 figures differ even though both name Qmerit data.43 The checked pages do not reconcile their definitions or samples. We show both, with their sources, rather than picking one as the national average.

The questions that explain your scope

  1. Capacity: is service work proposed, or only distribution/space work? What assessment supports it?
  2. Route: what length and path are assumed, including concealed access?
  3. Civil/restoration: trench, pedestal, pavement, wall repair or protection?
  4. Equipment/output: exact model, supplier, vehicle limit and assessed setting?
  5. Approvals: permit, inspection and utility responsibilities/charges?
  6. Handover: commissioning, accounts, test and warranties?

A short garage-wall circuit and a detached parking area with service work are different jobs. Neither a national average nor an out-of-range total proves a local quote is unreasonable.

Separate rebates from gross project cost

The IRS 30C credit ended for property placed in service after June 30, 2026.7 Check current state/utility records for covered expenses and approval order. Do not subtract a maximum program cap as though it were an approved payment for the property.

Larger properties need another budget

Building, business, hotel and depot work adds use, metering, utility design, civil/accessibility and operating responsibilities. Use utility coordination and operating-cost planning, rather than multiplying a home average by charger count.
