Check the scope of credentials
- Business identity and the person responsible for the work.
- Relevant license number, jurisdiction, status and permitted scope through the responsible authority.
- Manufacturer training where required or claimed for the product.
- Insurance appropriate to the job, verified through current evidence rather than a website badge.
- Experience with this property/use, permits and any utility work.

Ask for a usable scope
Equipment, capacity findings, route, protection, approvals, civil/restoration work, commissioning and warranty should be identifiable. Use the printable comparison. Ask what could change after further assessment and who approves a change.
A remote estimate can be useful
Photos and supplied details can support an initial estimate. The important questions are its assumptions, what remains unassessed and whether the price is provisional. Do not dismiss every remote estimate, or accept an unqualified firm total without its scope.
Know who handles what
Clarify permits/inspection, utility applications, product commissioning, account handover, workmanship and hardware faults. A referral service, contractor, utility and network provider have different jobs. Get contact/escalation details before work.
