EV charger commissioning, maintenance and warranties

Agree acceptance and handover before work. Keep registration, account ownership and warranty contacts with the records. Hardware warranty, workmanship cover and ongoing service are separate responsibilities.

Agree handover before installation
- Required permit/inspection completion and responsible party.
- Equipment model, serial number, installed settings and manuals.
- Vehicle test plus control/access/payment tests in scope.
- Owner account access and required registration.
- Use instructions, fault reporting and product user-controls.
- Hardware, workmanship and ongoing service contacts/terms.
Tesla requires Wall Connector commissioning and registration.1 Other products have their own steps. A light on a charger does not prove every agreed operating feature works.
Include handover needs in your request
Read three sets of terms
| Coverage | Ask |
|---|---|
| Hardware | Claimant, starting date, permitted home/commercial use, labor/shipping and exclusions |
| Workmanship | Covered installed work, term and return-visit process |
| Service/network | Monitored faults, hours, response versus repair, parts, uptime and renewals |
Tesla's documentation distinguishes residential and commercial terms.2 Confirm model and use; do not assume home cover applies at a shared site.
Keep accounts with the responsible owner
The operator should control admin, billing, access and renewal decisions. Document an installer's continuing support access and revocation. Avoid leaving building charging tied only to a departing employee's personal account.
Make fault handling usable
Display a support route and equipment identifier. Record time and affected equipment without publishing personal session data. Name who checks provider status, requests repair and informs users. A response target is not a repair guarantee.
DOE recommends assigned responsibility and response, repair and uptime expectations in service contracts.3 Negotiate those with the responsible provider; they are not EV Ready USA assurances.
Routine owner checks
Follow owner-maintenance instructions. Store cables, check visible condition without opening equipment, keep access clear and report damage. Stop using damaged equipment and follow product fault guidance; electrical repairs require qualified personnel. At a shared site, distinguish high demand from unavailable equipment before adding capacity.

How to compare EV charger installation quotes
Compare the same job before comparing totals. Ask each installer to identify equipment, electrical work, approvals, handover and exclusions. A lower total may leave out work included in another quote.

EV charger access, payments and billing
Decide who can charge and who pays before choosing hardware or network. Different users need different access and billing arrangements. A charging-session report is not automatically an approved utility billing meter.

EV charging ownership and service models
Compare equipment and wiring ownership, recurring costs and operating control. Purchase, managed services and third-party hosting allocate these differently. The actual contract matters more than the model’s label.
